Sony Ericsson W995

Latest phone from Sony Ericsson W995 - A walkman lover's phone

Sony Ericsson’s new Walkman series phone W995 complete all desired of  walkman phone lovers. It's a good-looking and easy-to-use music phone with excellent sound quality. This is a music phone that takes everything great about the Walkman range and makes it even better, thanks to the standard 3.5mm headphone jack at  the top.On the back is the 8.1 megapixel lens  LED flash and a small metal flip stand so you can set it somewhere handy to watch video
The Sony Ericsson W995 is a slider, so you'd expect it to be on the chunky side. That said, they've kept it reasonably slim by keeping the top part to a svelte 4mm, delivering the vital statistics of 97x49x15mm and 113g. So it's still a fair old handful, but not bad at all considering what's inside.
Display looks pleasing with its 2.6 inches. This is a feature Sony Ericsson has definitely improved on alongside of the previous models – all of them have smaller ones. Resolution, however, remains the same – QVGA and the screen supports 262k colors. No matter, image quality is really good. Thanks to the light sensitivity sensor, display is usable even in bright light, although colors get rather worn-out.
Similarly to the Sony Ericsson W705, the phone looks stylish, presentable and buttoned-down. Both its front side and battery cover are made of metal and sport nicely looking brushed pattern that is, however, hardly noticeable on the black handset we are reviewing. Still, the W995 also comes in silver and red varieties.

Nokia N8: new operating system and features to compete with the iPhone
Nokia has unveiled details of its first new Symbian 3 phone yesterday, designed to challenge the iPhone and Blackberry at the high-end of the market.
Nokia, which has yet to show the phone to journalists or analysts, is counting on the new software to start clawing back market share lost to the company's new rivals.
"Nokia is reacting to the fire alarm," said Swedbank analyst Jari Honko.
However analysts said the new model and software upgrade at best put Nokia on par with features already available to consumers of Google's Android software, or Sony Ericsson, which has sold a 12-megapixel camera phone since 2009.
"Symbian 3 is evolutionary not revolutionary, but N8, if reliable, is a first step in efforts to make Nokia's high-end phones credible again," said Ben Wood, head of research at CCS Insight.
The new N8 flagship model will have a 12 megapixel camera, 3.5-inch touch screen and retail for 370 euros ($532), excluding subsidies and taxes, Nokia said in a press release. It will include video editing software, access to local and global web TV services and live feeds from Facebook and Twitter in a single app. It will come with free global Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation. It is expected to go on sale in Australia in the third quarter of 2010.
Analysts said it was unclear how much of an impact the phone will have on a market it used to own but that lately has been shaken up by more intuitive devices.
"I believe it will slightly calm the markets. It does not solve all of Nokia's problems, but it is an important first step," said Nordea analyst Sami Sarkamies.
Nokia lacks a top-range model to challenge Apple's iPhone three years after its launch. Its last high-end hit phone was the N95, which was unveiled in 2006.
"Nokia is expected to catch up with rivals, but we will know more about this only when the first independent reviews are published. The first ones are quite mixed," said Swedbank's Honko.
The first review of the new phone, published by Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin - who has a strong track record of scooping unveiled Nokia phones - slammed the new model.
"It's the same as it was before with the same sauce, but with small changes in functionality," Murtazin wrote in www.mobile-review.com.
"We have the impression that ... rival producers have mixed with Nokia and are sabotaging and purposefully destroying the Nokia brand. This is the only explanation to what is happening," he wrote.
Like the iPhone, the new N8 comes with a fixed battery. So far Nokia phones have as a standard had removable and replaceable batteries.
Meanwhile, Nokia Siemens Networks, the mobile network equipment maker, said it would lay off up to 120 workers in Finland, on top of 450 job cuts announced last month.
The joint-venture between Finland's Nokia and Germany's Siemens said the latest layoffs would be mostly at its Espoo headquarters and two locations in western Finland.
The measures are part of company plans to axe 5700 jobs globally to annually save 500 million euros ($720 million) by 2011. It employs 64,300 people worldwide — up six per cent from a year earlier.
Nokia Siemens Networks, based in Espoo just outside Helsinki, is the world's second biggest networks manufacturer after L.M. Ericsson of Sweden.
